A Study of Stage Make-up Design on Joy, Anger, Sorrow and Pleasure -With a Focus on Color Psychology and Facial Expressions-

Abstract
These days makeup is a very important element within the performing arts on the stage. At first stage makeup was popularized, commercialized and modernized and it is being elaborated and specialized with the variation of performing arts. With performing arts advancing at a fast-growing rate, makeup has become an important expression element in performance. The degree of makeup completion effects the image of the whole performance and it decides success or failure of the performance. Makeup is one of the tools which make the performer abandon his or her own personality and become the right character for the performance. For this reason, makeup plays an important role. In addition, makeup is important not only for the audience but also for the performers` psychological view. Even though the performers have good acting skills, the lack of makeup can affect the whole performance negatively. Result of this, performers can`t deliver what they want to say and the evaluation of whole performance from the audience will be low Stage makeup is different from general makeup and photograph`s makeup. Stage makeup requires a fixed distance from the audience and controlled intensity of light and colors. Based on the size of theater, the makeup has to be changed and based on the changes of light, the color of makeup has to be changed. For this reason, stage makeup requires an artist who has a full understanding of various theories, a lot of skills and field experience. This study is comparing the performances of human emotions, such as joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure with and without makeup. When it is compared, basic techniques of makeup are focused and makeup is done based on color psychology and changes of appearance such as eyebrow, eye, nose and lips. The purpose of this study is to suggest a new makeup technique about human feelings such as joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure. As suggesting this, more logical and systematic reasons for makeup skills can be presented.
